You can usually see lighthouses in remote places of astonishing natural beauty. It is the stuff that inspires novels and masterpieces alike, for the symbolic force of its beacon light making paths safe for sailors at night. Another interesting aspect surrounding them is the isolated, quiet, seaside lifestyle led by lighthouse keepers. Castelhanos Lighthouse is no different. Located East of Ilha Grande, it is administered by Port Authority of Angra dos Reis.
To get to this 1900’s lighthouse, you take a trailhead for approximately 50 minutes from Castelhanos Beach. Along the way, past the thick woods, you get a stunning view of the sea.
The architecture of the Lighthouse is gorgeous. As we take off our shoes to climb up the long staircase, the keeper shares its story with us, and explains how it works. We also learn about the isolated life of the Castelhanos.
You will have a unique experience in the lighthouse.
